Abstract

This study aims to identify and thoroughly examine the visual character of the Hunto Sultan Amay Mosque in Gorontalo. The research uses a descriptive-analytical approach by describing the visual elements of the building. The visual character of this mosque reflects distinctive Islamic architectural features typically found in places of worship located in the Gorontalo city area. The Mosque is one of the designated Cultural Heritage objects in Gorontalo City, based on Mayor Decree No.127/10/II/2020. In this context, it was chosen as a case study of iconic architectural design, with the expectation that it may portray the visual identity of a mosque that represents Gorontalo City as the "Veranda of Medina." With the continuous advancement of architectural knowledge and practices, many buildings across different regions have begun to exhibit similar characteristics. Urban infrastructure reconstruction and development are ongoing processes. Gorontalo City, known as the "Veranda of Medina," is founded on the local philosophical principle of "Adat bersendikan syara’, syara’ bersendikan Kitabullah" (customs are grounded in Islamic law, and Islamic law is grounded in the Qur’an), reflecting the deep-rooted presence of Islam in community life. The historical development of Gorontalo City cannot be separated from the existence of the Hunto Sultan Amay Mosque, which has served as a center of Islamic activity and symbolizes strong religious character.
