This article focuses on the position of self-determination in the context of indigenous peoples' autonomy in Indonesia. This study explores the relationship between the principle of self-determination and the recognition and protection of the rights of indigenous peoples as independent legal entities, including how this principle is applied in the management of customary lands, customary forests, and natural resources. In addition, the study also discusses the impact of recognition of indigenous peoples' cultural identity and collective rights on the preservation of their cultural traditions, integration in national policies, and interaction with formal government. In the context of Indonesia, which is rich in ethnic and cultural diversity, the recognition of the right to self-determination is crucial to ensure social justice for indigenous peoples. This research also raises the role of international law, such as the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and other conventions, in strengthening the legal position of indigenous peoples. This study seeks to provide a critical analysis of the challenges faced by indigenous peoples in defending their rights amid the pressures of industrialization, capitalization of natural resources, and social marginalization. Using a normative approach and historical analysis, this article presents an in-depth conceptual framework on the relevance of self-determination in realizing the cultural sovereignty and economic rights of indigenous peoples in Indonesia, as well as offering policy recommendations to strengthen their autonomy under national and international legal frameworks.
